8: Let The
Sketching Begin
On September
13, 2011, Staake sketched out in a red copywriter's pencil the
entire 118 frame, 40 page book that measured 13" x 5".
In the drawings for Bluebird, he intentionally left details
out of the sketches. "When I sketched the book", says
Staake, "I wanted to establish a basic road map for the
story. When I would later sit down to create the final artwork,
these sketches would provide me with a general idea of where
I had to graphically go with the story, but I'd give myself room
to experiment and take some chances when rendering the details
of the final scenes in grays and blues."
