6: Building
The Bird
While the bluebird
would appear relatively small in most scenes throughout the book,
Staake knew that it would have to evoke the right level of emotion
from beginning to end of the story. Staake created a series
of character studies showing the bluebird in a variety of poses,
but he viewed these characterizations to be wrong. "My first
drawings of the bluebird just didn't sit right with me",
he said. "The original bluebird simply didn't seem to have
the personality I needed to convey."
